the land
slight slope down to the north, slight slope down to the west. olive
trees, many. oaks, some. dominating the landscape, overlooking the town
and its castle.
the site chosen to place the building is the highest part of the land.
dominating the view on the north and west, while smoothly captures the
best solar lighting. the access has been treated in that way is
uncovered the building among the olive trees as you approach it. the
last part of the way it’s made by walking through the existing
vegetation, what improves this purpose.
the building
it has two levels and it’s semi-integrated into the ground, so that at
the highest point on the first floor is on level with the ground. square
in floor plan, a central courtyard is the main character dealing with
each level in an opposite way. the ground floor is completely open to
the courtyard, while in the first floor there is no opening, keeping it
there the opaque access.
the program
the public areas and service areas of the house are on the ground floor,
the public ones are exposed and the service ones, with its own entrance,
are located in the basement. the rooms and private areas of the building
are located on the first floor with access through the courtyard and,
from there, to the private patio of each unit of accommodation. every
room opens onto a private patio with views to the landscape.
the materials
the whole building is a compact, light-colored block, withe its external
facade worked in order to consolidate the built as a unity, establishing
a direct dialogue with the traditional "alentejo montes”, small white
sparks of lime in the landscape. the various additions or accessories,
like skylights, are covered in agglomerated cork material with a strong
tradition for multiple uses in the region.
